Gregory G. Fletcher is a former naval aviator and now a practicing attorney. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, Class of 1969, and received his navy Wings of Gold in 1971. He served as a flight instructor in the navy's Basic Jet Training Command, resigning his regular commision in 1974, but continuing to fly in the Naval Reserve until 1976. He obtained his law degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1977. He contiunes to fly actively.
He is the son of Ensign Willard M. Fletcher, one of the principal characters in the book, and a long-time student of the carrier war in the Pacific, a history made personal by living on Okinawa in the late 1950s and by the stories his father told him. He is married to his wife of nearly forty years, Carolyn, and has three children, Scott, Anne and Emily.
